Tips for Public Speaking - NYTimes.com

Anxiety: We worry. A gallery of contributors count the ways.

Nearly everyone gets some anxiety about public speaking ? even Oscar-winning actors. Here are some tips to help you through a big speech:

Imagine everyone in the audience naked. Empathetically conjure up the array of body-image issues they must have dealt with, especially in adolescence. Alter the direction of your speech, engaging them in a group-therapy session. To make them feel comfortable, get naked.

Remember, the audience really wants you to succeed. Except that one guy in the back, Brad.

Don?t apologize for seeming nervous?the audience probably hasn?t noticed. Unless you?re sweating or stumbling over your words. If you do, apologize for it. If your sweating or stumbling gets in the way of the delivery of your apology, apologize for that. Get into an inescapable vicious cycle of apologizing and sweating/stumbling. It?s adorably charming, but only because you?re British actor Hugh Grant. Wait ? you?re not Hugh Grant? Whoops. I thought I was giving public-speaking tips tailored specifically to Hugh Grant. Forget everything I said up until now.

Focus on one person in the middle of the crowd throughout your speech. Afterward, trail him home. Knock on his door. Offer an introduction like, ?Hi. I?m from the speech. Earlier.? He?ll reply with something along the lines of, ?I know. Um?what are you doing here?? ?I thought??you?ll stammer, searching for the right words??I just thought we could hang out, maybe, and be friends.? ?I have friends,? he?ll probably say. ?And I?m with my family now.? Blurt out, too quickly, ?I?m not trying to replace your family!? He?ll close the door in your face, gently, more out of pity than fear. Don?t use him as a crowd-focusing person for the next speech, because it would be weird.

Get used to the room beforehand. Walk around, check the view from the podium, sleep there for a few days, cook in the facility?s kitchen, bathe in the bathroom, develop a delusional sense of ownership over the venue, and never leave it for fear that the outside world will ?infect? you.

Remember that the audience really wants you to succeed. Except for that one guy, in back, Brad. He doesn?t. But don?t think about him during your speech. Though it?s hard not to, right? He?s always so negative, with that smirk on his face. Still, block him out. Yet that smirk. It?s so smugly self-satisfied. Just don?t let him get to ? argh, I can?t stand him. I?m sorry, I should be helping you, but I can?t get Brad out of my head.

Abstain from milk products before speaking. Not because some people believe that milk triggers mucus production, but because the dairy industry is responsible for a lot of the underlying political problems in this country. Seriously, I read a blog about it ? I?ll send it to you.

Practice your speech on close friends beforehand. You don?t have any close friends? And that?s why you?re worried about performing onstage, because the absence of intimates in your life suggests a dearth of charisma and amiability? My fault, I still thought I was talking to the charismatic and amiable Hugh Grant.

Speak through your diaphragm. Everyone will be distracted from how bad your speech is by your bizarre employment of a cervical barrier.

Be cocky, not confident. Everyone loves a supremely arrogant person who is, at heart, deeply insecure and who takes out those vulnerabilities on weaker people. God, Brad is such a jerk. O.K., I won?t mention him again, I swear.

Outline your speech on index cards but don?t memorize it, to boost spontaneity. About halfway through, dramatically throw away your index cards and say, ?You know, I had a speech prepared, but I want to talk about something that really matters to me.? Then recite, word-for-word, a carefully composed jeremiad, hidden underneath the index cards, against the nefarious dairy industry.

In your speechwriting, avoid clich?s, like the plague. Getting the plague is such a clich?. (Note: this item is taken from a pamphlet on public-speaking tips from the 14th century.)

Brad is head of marketing for Big Dairy. That should tell you everything.

End your speech on a memorable anecdote filled with specific details that the audience can latch onto. One time I did this, and it worked really well.

When all else fails, screen the director?s cut of ?Four Weddings and a Funeral.? You gave some amazing wedding speeches in that.

Bernadette Coveney Smith: Wedding Magazine Rejects Ad Featuring Lesbian Brides

If you're in the wedding industry, you may have caught the story floating around Facebook and Twitter about Anne Almasy, the wedding photographer from Atlanta who bought an ad in Weddings Unveiled magazine, only to have that ad rejected because it showed a photo of two brides. Not one bride. Not a bride and a groom. But two brides, marrying each other.

I hate that this happened and that Anne Almasy had to have those conversations with the magazine. But I love that this happened and I love that Anne Almasy had to have those conversations. Because, she, a straight women, wrote a fantastic blog poston what happened and her reaction.

An excerpt:

A friend of mine asked me, "Aren't there other publications who would be happy to advertise to the gay community?" And, you know, yes, I'm quite sure there are. But I chose Weddings Unveiled because I'm not trying to advertise to "the gay community." I'm advertising to couples who are getting married. This couple didn't get "gay married." They didn't have a "gay wedding." They got married. They had a wedding. They share their lives, their joys and sorrows, and all the mundane daily things that we all share with our partners. They are just people. In love. Committed to one another.

And that blog post is getting a lot of attention and shining light on this issue. Yes, the wedding industry is evolving to be more LGBT-inclusive. But we also have a very long way to go. Weddings Unveiled brought to light one of the most common questions I'm asked during my LGBT wedding trainings for wedding professionals: How do I market to same-sex couples without alienating my straight audience?

This is a legitimate fear that many in the wedding industry have. Clearly Weddings Unveiled is afraid of alienating their straight audience. They have a business. I get it. But the millennial generation, the majority of those planning weddings, overwhelmingly support same-sex marriage. In one study, 68 percent of American millennials supported same-sex marriage.

Still, there are examples of businesses that would rather not support these fabulous gay weddings. There's the bakery in Oregon that refused a wedding cake to a lesbian couple. There's the transportation company in Maryland that decided not to service ANY weddings rather than complying with the state requirement that they now service same-sex weddings. There's the venue in upstate New York that told a lesbian couple to go elsewhere. And so on.

Many other businesses suddenly get all booked up when they realize they're talking to a same-sex couple. Others don't return calls and e-mails regarding gay weddings. This stuff happens all the time and I'm thrilled to see some press about it.

I'm also pleased with how Weddings Unveiled quickly and sincerely responded:

The issue is very sensitive and it is also very divided. We knew that it was possible that people would be offended if we published the ad and we knew that it was possible that people would be offended if we did not. We are so sorry that we acted out of fear and uncertainty. We had never been faced with such a decision and we should have acted with our hearts.

Because as Anne so beautifully said to Weddings Unveiled, "I hope you will see it through the eyes of history, for surely someday very soon your decision will seem archaic and absurd."

Man sues Brainerd college over Facebook comments

BRAINERD, Minn. (AP) ? A nursing student has filed a federal lawsuit against officials at Brainerd's Central Lakes College, alleging that he was wrongly expelled over comments he posted on Facebook.

Craig Keefe, 37, of Gull Lake, filed the suit in U.S. District Court naming the school's president Larry Lundblad as well a vice president, a dean, the head of the nursing program and the chief executive of the state's college system.

Keefe wants to be reinstated to his nursing program as well as damages from the defendants, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press (http://bit.ly/YrLJJL).

Keefe's attorney, Jordan Kushner, said school officials never gave the Keefe a specific explanation for his expulsion in December and violated the college's rules by denying him an appeal. Keefe was a semester away from finishing his studies to be a registered nurse.

"I get a lot of calls about a lot of civil rights issues, and this one jumped out at me," said Kushner. "There's just such a huge, glaring absence of due process and a violation of his free-speech rights. It seems obvious that Facebook is his business."

Michael Dougherty, a vice chancellor at the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, said he couldn't comment on pending litigation.

"The College's legal response will be filed by the Attorney General's Office with the federal district court," he wrote Monday in an email.

The suit claims school officials complained to Keefe over two Facebook posts. One allegedly used a derogatory term and the other was "a comment about there not being enough whiskey for anger management."

But Kushner said administrators never showed the offending posts to Keefe, nor did they tell him specifically what he is alleged to have done wrong.

"He really doesn't know. That's a big basis for the lawsuit," Kushner said. "It's a public institution. You're entitled to due process before any type of significant action is taken against you. You deserve to know what the charges are and the chance to be heard."

Central Lakes College has about 6,000 students, and Keefe had been a student there for 3 1/2 years. He is a licensed practical nurse and was enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing Program to become a registered nurse.

Kushner said Central Lake's nursing program isn't accredited so Keefe can't transfer his credits to another school to finish his studies and become a registered nurse.

"Unless we get the court to order him back in, that degree is shot," he said. "All the time spent on it is lost."

Pictures and story by Olivia Miwil

Ordering the same food of what I had few years back at the same restaurant is
sort of a time-travelling experience. ?If I am lucky, the similar
delicious taste would help in recalling the conversation and mood that
took place before. Otherwise, it usually turns out to be my last visit
    to the restaurant.

?How do you ensure your food will be as great as now in future? Have
your main chef signed a life-long contract with this restaurant??.

Those were the questions I asked Farrari Restaurant & Bistro manager
Jack Lau after I enjoyed few of its signature dishes.

Lau, who has been in this industry since he was 10, assured me that
the quality would remain the same even if their main chef Donny
Richard was going to leave them.

The restaurant?s production team is going to take care of the quality
as they are responsible in keeping the inimitable secret recipes.

?Another words, by having this production team, any of our workers
will be able to serve of what you are having today,? he added.

As he gave his words, I decided to put some faith to drop by this
place more often in future especially during lunch time.

Farrari offers value added sets lunch priced at RM9.90 each which
comprises of main course, soup of the day and a tall-size glass lemon
    tea.

For the main course, I opted for Spaghetti Carbonara among other
choices including Asian food. ?The spaghetti is accompanied with
hearty portion of black pepper grilled chicken. The combination
textures of smooth creamy spaghetti and grounded-black pepper dish is
totally a new pleasant experience for me.

I was curious on how the restaurant earns profit from those lunch set
dishes served in big portion with most of the high-quality ingredients
    are imported.

The manager explained that the eatery would eventually make money once
customers agreed their products were more worthy than what they?ve
    paid.

?The restaurant intends to impress customers so that they will revisit
this place and of course help us to spread the good news to others,?
    he added.

Besides the money aspect, my concern will be whether the food could
provide my good health. ? Their homely-taste mushroom soup was
satisfying mainly because it used fresh ingredients and is served
    while it?s warm.

Other must-try item is the restaurant?s signature Farrari burger. The
presentation where the burger patty was on top of the bun left me a
deep impression as a burger that has its bun sandwiched between
patties? And the dish came with black pepper gravy that was sweetened
with pineapples slices. ?I like to cut them from top to bottom, seeing
the soft minced beef dissembled and fell into the gravy, and scoop the
    entire thing to my mouth.

Another dish, the lamb shank looked really appetising as it had the
shining black pepper appearance, the next bottom layers were the
buttery mashed potatoes and greenish coral salad. It was a harmony
    colorful dish.

The meat imported from New Zealand, was marinated and slow-grilled for
two days before it was served. Yes, the taste of black pepper was
    absorbed into the tender meat.

At here, during daytime, its yam-flavored bubble drink is one of the
most-selling beverages. For me, its ?bubble? referring to a
rounded-shape ball made from tapioca is the main factor to say whether
the drink is good or otherwise. As I chewed them, the size of bubbles
was only medium as compared to other brands, and it has springy
    texture.

    -Ends.

Japan's Nikkei jumps on weaker yen

(AP) ? Tokyo's Nikkei 225 led Asian stocks higher Tuesday as the yen weakened after a possible candidate for Bank of Japan governor voiced support for easier monetary policy. Investors shrugged off an apparent nuclear test by North Korea.

The yen has dropped almost 8 percent against the dollar this year after Japan elected Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in December. Abe has been calling for Japan's central bank to ease monetary policy more aggressively to help spur economic growth.

The Nikkei, which was closed Monday for a public holiday, jumped 2.5 percent to 11,431.94 as the weaker yen boosted export stocks. South Korea's Kospi fell 0.1 percent to 1,949.14 while benchmarks in Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines rose.

Markets in mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan were closed for Lunar New Year holidays.

Japan's central bank governor Masaaki Shirakawa, who has appeared at odds with Abe's views on monetary policy, is resigning next month, giving the government an opportunity to find a successor more sympathetic to its aims.

Asian Development Bank President Haruhiko Kuroda voiced support Monday for Abe's economic policies including the introduction of a 2 percent inflation target but kept mum about speculation he may become the next BOJ governor. In an interview with media organizations including Kyodo News, Kuroda said the BOJ's introduction of the target, proposed by Abe, was "epoch-making" and should be achieved "in about two years."

The Bank of Japan holds a two-day policy meeting starting Wednesday but analysts said no new initiatives were expected in light of the impending leadership change.

Markets, meanwhile, were unfazed by South Korea's announcement that it suspected North Korea had conducted a nuclear test Tuesday. Monitoring agencies around the globe said an unusual seismic event in the North, located near the site of a previous nuclear test, had explosion like characteristics. There was no confirmation from Pyongyang that it had conducted a test, which it has been threatening for weeks.

In Australia, the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.1 percent to 4,964.20 although investors remained tentative ahead of earnings reports due out this week from major companies including Rio Tinto Ltd. and Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

"It's a good chance to see if the rally we've had is actually justified," said Evan Lucas of IG Markets in Melbourne.

Among individual stocks, Nissan Motor Co. fell 3.8 percent in Tokyo. The company on Friday reported a 35 percent plunge in October-December profit as global sales languished.

Wall Street stocks drifted lower in thin trading Monday. With major indexes near records, many think the six-week rally is ready for a pause. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 0.2 percent to 13,971.24. The S&P 500 dipped less than 0.1 percent to 1,517.01. The Nasdaq composite slipped less than 0.1 percent to 3,192.00.

Benchmark oil for March delivery was down 16 cents to $96.88 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.31 to finish at $97.03 a barrel in New York on Monday as the euro strengthened against the dollar.

In currencies, the dollar rose to 94.11 yen from 93.70 yen late Monday in New York. The euro was unchanged at $1.3389.

The euro has strengthened recently, raising concern it will hurt exports from the 17 euro countries. French President Francois Hollande has suggested the eurozone needs to manage its exchange rate. ECB President Mario Draghi indicated the bank does not seek any particular exchange rate, which is set by markets, but is monitoring the stronger euro's effect on inflation.

So, how much money does it cost to produce your podcast, and why ...

    79489-breaking-bad-breaking-bad

Something happened over the course of the last 48 hours that had many people on the internet questioning the cost of producing a successful podcast, and ever since, I?ve had quite a few people approach me about it. Not too long ago, I wrote an article titled Obsession or Passion?, about my four years of blogging and podcasting here at Sound On Sight. I felt now would be a great time to release a follow up to that piece, and in doing so, I would adress these questions.

How much does it cost to produce the Sound On Sight podcast?

I can?t claim to be an expert in podcasting but I have been doing it for about five years. Between the 350 episodes of the Sound On Sight podcast and 50 Sordid Cinema shows, we will reach our 400th recording next week. And that doesn?t include the Walking Dead Podcast, which I also host, produce and edit, on a separate feed.

The answer to this first question, is however, a bit complicated.

When we started, we were actually a radio show, broadcasting out of CJLO, 1690 AM, here in Montreal. At the time, we were lucky enough to use the station?s equipment to record the show. However, the biggest cost came when we left the station in 2011, after recording 250 episodes. You see, we were in dire need of purchasing equipment so we could build our own recording studio at home. That was one of only two times that we have asked our listeners to help us out financially. The second, and last time, came when we asked for help to get us to the Toronto International Film Festival.

Every podcast is different, and every podcaster uses different services, and every show drives in a different amount of listeners, which uses up a certain amount of bandwidth. So I can only speak for us, but our biggest expense comes with the actual website, and not the podcasts. Our bandwidth is already included with the cost for soundonsight.org, which is why we can afford to have seven shows on our site, regardless of their popularity.

Anyone with an Internet connection and some inexpensive audio equipment can produce a podcast and make it available online. Hence the reason there are thousands of podcasters, ranging from unemployed teenagers to businessmen to celebrities. In order to put your podcast online you either need a website, or you need a podcasting network such as Libsyn. If you are tech savvy, your best getting your own website, and storing the mp3?s there. It would actually be cheaper than paying a monthly fee to a company like Libsyn, and you will be sole proprietor of your show; not to mention you?ll have a website to accompany it. There are plenty of web hosting companies that offer great deals. Unless you have tens of thousands of listeners, you could easily get the needed storage space for all your episodes, and bandwidth combined, for about $5 ? $7 a month. In fact, if you are smart, you can even get unlimited bandwidth. I know, because we had an unlimited plan during our first four years. So for $7 a month, I was able to host The Televerse, The Walking Dead, The Game of Thrones, Sordid Cinema, Doctor Who and the Sound On Sight podcasts, all under one roof, and all billed to me in one invoice.

What if we have too many listeners using too much bandwidth? Wouldn?t that cost a lot?

Again, you just need to shop around and find the right provider. Just check out our stats for our show below. If you think you will reach more downloads in a month?s time, than maybe you should play it safe and try to find unlimited service.

    SOSSTATS

And now, to answer the biggest question posed to me lately: Should I donate to a podcast?

This is a silly question. It is your money and thus your decision. If you feel a podcast is worth your hard earned money, than sure donate. As a podcaster, I wouldn?t say no to a donation. It is hard work. My only gripe comes when a podcaster is dishonest about why he or she claims they need donations to keep a show alive and running. Yes, there are costs, but all too often, it seems podcasters throw in the most ridiculous reasons, like handling their cable bill. Nobody is cancelling their internet or cable because you are not willing to pay for their podcast, and these days, Skype and a fairly affordable microphone would do the trick. In fact, when we recorded our show using professional equipment at the station, we actually had to decrease the quality of the file when uploading each episode to our server. Now that we use a simple mic and Skype, we don?t have to decrease the quality, and the end result is the same. The difference in sound is negligible.

Why did we decrease the quality of our mp3?

We also have to consider our listeners, and the amount of bandwidth they are using, especially, if they are like me, and listen on a mobile device. I can?t tell you how many times, I?ve gone over my usage because I listen to far too many podcasts. So the lower the quality, the better it is for a downloader. At the end of the month, those podcasters aren?t helping to pay for my phone bill. So when a very popular website is demanding money for their podcast, ?threatening to shut it down otherwise, I?d just ask you look at all the variables, before feeling guilty about not donating.

    What about advertising?

Popular websites with millions of readers are more than likely to have CPM advertising featured on their site. Sound On Sight is not lucky enough, at least not yet. We are still very young and so we use PPC Advertising Networks at the moment. Google AdSense is the most popular option under this category, but there are also others. These networks serve contextual ads (either text or images) relevant to your website, and you will earn a certain amount of money for every click. But every blogger out there knows, you will not make much money using a click-through rate (CTR) and cost per click (CPC) network. If so, we would all be rich and google would be out of business.

Now I know what you are thinking. Most people who listen to podcasts do so through iTunes and never even access the web site, thus they never make an impression on the ads appearing on the post. This is very true, which is why I always listen to a podcast on the actual site, and I recommend everyone ditch iTunes and to the same if you want to support your favourite show. Just think about how much their ad revenue would increase each month, if the thousands of iTunes listeners were driving traffic to their website instead.

I?m no expert in advertising, and if I was, I might just be able to make a profit from our site, but here is what I know.

Popular websites usually do business with an online media agency who sets them up with CPM advertising. These campaigns pay according to the number of impressions that the ads displayed on their site generate. CPM stands for Cost per Mille, and it refers to the cost for 1,000 impressions. So if a blog generates 1,000,000 page views monthly displaying an advertising banner with a $1 CPM, the publisher could earn $1000 monthly minus rev share. If a website is extremely popular, they might be lucky enough to land some Premium ads. ?Those ads can earn a publisher anywhere from $6 ? 12 for every 1000 impressions, minus rev share. CPM rates vary with the network, the position of the ad, the format, the network, and so on. So if a website has millions of readers, they most likely have a higher CPM rate. So do the math.

Blogger, critics and podcasters are not rich and often criminally under-payed by large corporations. But if you are a podcaster, and you are going to ask for money, just be honest about why. If you believe you produce a quality show, and it is worth charging for, than state that as a reason. No one has ever has a problem in paying for entertainment.

Have you ever donated to a show or would you?

I?ve only donated to one show, once in my life time, and that show was Filmspotting. Adam puts in so much time in reaching out to his audience, and so I feel he deserves it. I am pretty sure he spends more time with feedback, than actually reviewing films. Filmspotting also delivers a quality product every week, and they are one of the few reasons we started. They are a big inspiration to us all.

If I had the money, I would donate to several podcasts, but unfortunately I am not financially in a position to do so. However, I would never donate to any podcaster that threatens to shutdown their show or demands it for insincere reasons.

I?ve asked Bill Thompson to write an article listing his favorite film podcasts. I recommend looking out for it, since I?m sure you?ll discover quality shows, all worth donating to.

Why don?t you get a sponsor?

The topic has arisen several times in the past few years with my colleague Simon Howell, and the answer is always the same. The podcast is our escape. It is the fun part. If I had to beg for money, I?d prefer to use the actual website as an excuse. You know what?s hard work? Hard work is writing a film review or a 2000 word article. Hard work is editing content and keeping the site running. Recording a podcast is a blast. The last thing I want to do is worry about recording some 60 second spot to promote a product I don?t care much about. As far as donations go: We just don?t feel right about asking our listeners to pay us, to sit around and discuss movies with friends. When we ask, it is because we really need it. With that said, if you want to support our show, simply give us a rating on iTunes or like us on Facebook.

I?m not saying that I am apposed to podcasts asking for donations. I just mentioned above, that I myself donated to Filmspotting, and we?ve asked when needed. All I am saying is, don?t always believe the hype. There are many talented podcasters out there, who are not fortunate enough to host their podcast on an extremely popular website. I like Hollywood films and I like independent cinema. The same applies to podcasts. I support both, but for the right reasons.

So why are you leaving the podcast?

As mentioned above, I love recording the podcast. The problem is, I wear too many hats here at Sound On Sight: Tech support, web design, reviewer, blogger, editor, not to mention recording, editing and producing several podcasts every week. I actually made a huge sacrifice and went unemployed for six months. Why, you ask? In the first four years of running Sound On Sight, I worked a part time and full time job, while in and out of school. The only reason I was able to barely keep up, was because I was lucky enough to work two jobs that allowed me access to the internet at all times. So needless to say, multi-tasking was essential. I took six months off so I could concentrate on improving certain aspects of the website, that I just had no time for in the past. Some of you may have noticed the drastic visual change, but that is just the start of it all. There is plenty you don?t see, and more to come.

I guess after five years, I need a break. I?ve wanted to walk away many times in the past, but I was always searching for someone to take over. Simon is amazing, but he also has too much on his plate. He needs an equal, and so I?ve decided to ask Josh Spiegel, the host of the Mousterpiece Cinema podcast to replace me. Josh has quickly become one of Sound On Sight?s most valuable players, and I know that he will make ten times the host I was. I am confident the show will be safe in his hands.

There are still many unanswered questions. For starters, we are still not yet sure what is happening with our Sordid Cinema series. There is a chance that I will stay onboard to host the show. Either way, I am not leaving the podcast world entirely, as I still have The Walking Dead podcast to record. I guess you can say, I am simply cutting back, in order to concentrate on other things, and hopefully bigger projects, and perhaps, find a way to take Sound On Sight to the next level.

With that said, I?d like to thank each and every listener, co-host and hater. The past five years have been absolutely incredible. We should be posting our 400th recording sometime around Valentine?s Day. It will be heartbreaking for me, but it needs to be done.

    Nothing but love,

    Ricky D

    Laikipia Plateau: First Scouting Session

After a few days spent settling in at the field station--getting oriented with the vehicle (read: learning to drive manual shift on the opposite side of the vehicle from what I'm used to, in a Land Rover on bouncy bush roads), gathering some supplies from town, and doing overall game planning, I finally made it out into the field yesterday. I headed up to the northern part of Mpala with my field assistant, Simon (whose knowledge of this ecosystem is just astounding), to scout out places to set up my mesopredator trapping grid. We drove almost the entire length of the Mpala Research Conservancy (MRC), and it was wonderful to be out and about in the field at last. When Simon and I finally got to my first sampling site (a 25 kilometer drive takes close to an hour on these roads), we headed out on foot to determine the best way to orient and structure the grid. A key component of trapping mammals is to make sure that trapping stations are close enough to one other to keep animals from slipping between them without noticing any bait, but not so close that you limit yourself to the home range of just one or a few individuals, and to keep the traps a standard distance from on another--they are most often arranged in rectangular grids. The rules can change depending upon the social structure of the target species and the questions you seek to answer with the data, of course, but those are the general guidelines for the type of abundance/diversity sampling that I'm doing. Simon and I decided to set up a grid starting along a nearby luga--the local term for a small stream channel that often only actually has water during the wet season and to extend outwards across the savanna from that. In case you are wondering what the terrain here looks like, here is a shot of the incipient trapping grid (with Simon telling me about the luga just off in the distance). Unfortunately, our luga exploration was truncated when Simon noticed a large bull elephant (Loxodonta africana) lurking a few hundred meters away. Although many people think of carnivores as the main killers on the savannah, elephants and buffalo are actually the ones that people out here tend to be the most concerned about. Lone bulls are often thought to be especially dangerous. Elephants (presumably both the African and Asian species) actually kill upwards of 500 people each year, and the Cape buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is commonly said to kill more hunters than any other species in Africa. Both elephants and buffalo are enormous, travel in large groups, are unbelievably quiet as they move through the bush, and have the unfortunate pairing of short tempers and sharp weapons on their skulls. The rule around here is that if an elephant is occupying a spot at a given time, the elephant gets to keep that spot until he/she decides they're ready to move on. So Simon and I hiked east, away from the elephant but not in a direction that would let it easily get between us and our vehicle. We kept scouting the farther portion of our planned grid, and spotted an Eastern Chanting Goshawk (Melierax poliopterus) on our way. What makes a good trapping site for a mesopredator, anyway? As you can see in the picture, the acacia woodlands found in this area consist mostly of acacias or other small trees dispersed across relatively sparse ground, with bunches of vegetation crowded around the base. Those bunches of vegetation are ideal mesopredator trapping spots, because a trap can be wedged into the grasses to resemble a burrow. This also keeps the animal from stealing bait out of the back of the trap and generally makes it feel less exposed as it enters the doorway. The vegetation provides essential shade from the sun--we don't want any crispy mongoose on our hands. I will also be wrapping the traps in shade paper before setting them, but the vegetation itself does the best job of keeping things as cool as possible. (Just a note, the traps are opened in the evening and checked first thing in the morning, so no animals are ever left inside a trap in during heat of the day). The site we scouted yesterday is to the far north of the MRC, meaning that the site gets relatively little rainfall (will likely experience more frequent and intense droughts as global climate change progresses. Thus, the dry sampling areas in my study may be representative of what the environment will be like in the more southern--and historically wetter--portions of Laikipia in the near future. Another hugely rewarding part of this week was that I finally laid eyes on one of my study animals! This afternoon I spotted two dwarf mongoose (Helogale parvula) in the grass not far from the station. These small herpestids are extremely wary critters, and they rarely stick around long once they detect that they're being observed. Dwarf mongoose have a social structure that is actually very similar to that of the ever-popular meerkats (Suricata suricatta), and they also have a neat vigilance mutualism with hornbills. The hornbills hang around while mongoose are foraging and eat some of the insects that the little mammals grub up, and in "exchange" they emit alarm calls when they see predators, warning other hornbills and mongoose alike that danger is near. I'm interested to see whether hornbill sightings are a good indicator of finding dwarf mongoose at a given locality in this ecosystem. I will report back once we start getting the traps set--fingers crossed for lots of mesopredators in the traps and no elephants stepping on them! Images: copyright by author. Twitter searches to finally include tweets older than one week

Twitter has developed a way to bring up tweets older than a week in searches, potentially putting an end to a common frustration among users.

Up until now, searches conducted on the Twitter website (or through Twitter apps) brought up only recent tweets, making it difficult for users to discover anything that was posted more than a week ago. But on Thursday, Paul Burstein, a Twitter engineer working on the service's search infrastructure, explained in a post on the official Twitter blog that changes to searchs will be rolled out "over the coming days."

Burstein adds that search results will still only "represent a fairly small percentage of total tweets ever sent," but that Twitter will be "steadily increasing this percentage over time." (Perhaps one day we'll be able to search every tweet ever posted? One can only hope.)

The move to expand the search feature follows the announcement of a tool allowing users to download their full Twitter archive. Access to this tool began gradually rolling out at the end of 2012.

Robotic Russian Supply Ship Leaves Space Station

An unmanned Russian cargo ship undocked from the International Space Station Saturday (Feb. 9) to make way for a fresh delivery of supplies for the six astronauts living on the orbiting laboratory next week.

The trash-filled Progress 48 supply ship undocked from the space station's Russian Pirs docking port at 8:15 a.m. EST (1315 GMT) and was expected to intentionally destroy itself by burning up in Earth's atmosphere a few hours later.

"We just undocked a spaceship from our Space Station," Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, a flight engineer on the space station, wrote in a Twitter post Saturday. "The Progress robot ship is loaded with trash, to burn up like a meteorite in 3.5 hrs."

The departure of Progress 48 clears a parking spot for the next Russian cargo ship to use when it launches toward the International Space Station on Monday (Feb. 11). That spacecraft, the Progress 50 supply ship, will launch from the Central Asian spaceport of Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 9:41 a.m. EST (1441 GMT on Monday, though it will late evening at the launch site. ?Russia's Progress cargo ships are vital spacecraft that have helped keep astronauts stocked with food, clothing and other vital supplies during their six-month missions.?

Like recent Progress missions to the space station, the flight of Progress 50 will last just six hours. The spacecraft is due to dock at the space station at 3:40 p.m. EST (2040 GMT) after four orbits of Earth. The flight plan is faster way for Progress ships to reach the station. Before it was implemented, Progress flights took two days to reach the space station, much like Russia's manned Soyuz space capsule flights. [Space Station's Robot Cargo Ship Fleet (Photos)]

Progress 50 will deliver nearly 2.9 tons of supplies for the space station's Expedition 34 crew, which includes three Russian cosmonauts, two American astronauts and Hadfield, who represents the Canadian Space Agency. The new cargo ship will deliver about 764 pounds (346 kilograms) of rocket propellant, 110 pounds (50 kg) of oxygen and air, 926 pounds (420 kg) of water and 3,000 pounds (1,360 kg) of spare parts, science equipment and other supplies, NASA officials said.

The Russian Federal Space Agency's three-module Progress spacecraft are similar in appearance to its crew-carrying Soyuz spacecraft. Both vehicles have orbital and propulsion modules, but the Progress spacecraft does not have a crew return capsule in its middle. Instead, it has another cargo module to carry propellant for the space station's maneuvers.

Since Progress cargo ships are not designed to return to Earth, they are regularly filled with tons of trash and unneeded items, and then sent to burn up in the atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean. Robotic resupply ships for the station built by Europe and Japan also meet the same fate.

The American unmanned Dragon cargo ships built by the private spaceflight company SpaceX, which flew to the space station twice in 2012, are designed to re-enter the atmosphere and can return science experiments and other gear to Earth.

NASA will broadcast live views of Monday's Progress 50 spacecraft launch and docking via NASA TV. You can watch the Progress 50 spacecraft live on SPACE.com here, courtesy of NASA's feed.

New whooping cough strain in US raises questions

(AP) ? Researchers have discovered the first U.S. cases of whooping cough caused by a germ that may be resistant to the vaccine.

Health officials are looking into whether cases like the dozen found in Philadelphia might be one reason the nation just had its worst year for whooping cough in six decades. The new bug was previously reported in Japan, France and Finland.

"It's quite intriguing. It's the first time we've seen this here," said Dr. Tom Clark of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The U.S. cases are detailed in a brief report from the CDC and other researchers in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.

Whooping cough is a highly contagious disease that can strike people of any age but is most dangerous to children. It was once common, but cases in the U.S. dropped after a vaccine was introduced in the 1940s.

An increase in illnesses in recent years has been partially blamed on a version of the vaccine used since the 1990s, which doesn't last as long. Last year, the CDC received reports of 41,880 cases, according to a preliminary count. That included 18 deaths.

The new study suggests that the new whooping cough strain may be why more people have been getting sick. Experts don't think it's more deadly, but the shots may not work as well against it.

In a small, soon-to-be published study, French researchers found the vaccine seemed to lower the risk of severe disease from the new strain in infants. But it didn't prevent illness completely, said Nicole Guiso of the Pasteur Institute, one of the researchers.

The new germ was first identified in France, where more extensive testing is routinely done for whooping cough. The strain now accounts for 14 percent of cases there, Guiso said.

In the United States, doctors usually rely on a rapid test to help make a diagnosis. The extra lab work isn't done often enough to give health officials a good idea how common the new type is here, experts said.

"We definitely need some more information about this before we can draw any conclusions," the CDC's Clark said.

The U.S. cases were found in the past two years in patients at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in Philadelphia. One of the study's researchers works for a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, which makes a version of the old whooping cough vaccine that is sold in other countries.

Astronauts Will Tackle Your Questions In A Google+ Hangout From The International Space Station

issGetting a glimpse into the lives of astronauts in space has been de rigueur since the days of the Apollo program, but actually interacting with those busy space-dwellers? That's a much more modern trend, and one that NASA seems eager to continue. To that end, NASA recently announced that U.S. astronauts Kevin Ford and Tom Marshburn and Chris Hadfield of the Canadian Space Agency would be fielding questions in what the organization is billing as the first Google+ hangout from the International Space Station at 11AM Eastern on February 22.

Morrissey rules as The Governor in 'Walking Dead'

(AP) ? "Brother against brother," says The Governor fiercely. "Winner goes free. Fight to the death."

Is this any way to run a town?

AMC's zombie drama "The Walking Dead" ended the first half of this season with a wrenching faceoff: roughneck brothers Merle and Daryl were pitted in a bloody test of loyalty to The Governor as he rallied his flock ? the residents of Woodbury, Ga. ? to goad them on.

    That was last December.

Things haven't settled down as the hit horror serial returns for another eight episodes Sunday at 9 p.m. EST. The death match continues. The Governor, played by David Morrissey, is increasingly oppressive, even deranged.

"With Woodbury, he has built a sanctuary, a place of safety where humanity can start again," says Morrissey. "But the negative side of power is like a wobbly tooth for him. He just can't stop sticking his tongue in there. There's something gloriously painful about it, and he likes that."

He seems to be losing his marbles as he sees threats both within and beyond the town walls. This has placed on his enemies list not only the zombies ? with their ploddingly persistent appetite for human flesh ? but also mortals, who are far less predictable. These include the ragtag refugees led by Sheriff Rick Grimes hiding out in an abandoned prison nearby.

"You can adapt to the zombie threat, and that's part of what Woodbury is about," says Morrissey. "But the new problem that has emerged in Season 3 is human beings. What you have now is two communities of humans in conflict. That's much more complicated."

In other words: What's scarier than the undead? The living!

In the past, The Governor exhibited a softer side. His most touching moments showed his desperate attempts to stay connected with Penny, his undead little girl. Removing her from the cell in his apartment where he kept her chained, he lovingly combed her wiry zombie hair in one memorable scene, while she snarled and snapped ferociously.

Strange as it was, the scene made perfect sense to Morrissey.

"You have a sick child and you're trying to do normal things that just aren't normal anymore," he says. "There's great certainty and comfort in the past, and he was trying to re-create that."

But in December's finale, Penny was stabbed by Michonne, an intruder out to kill The Governor.

"He loses the one thing he lives for," says Morrissey, adding with a bit of understatement, "Now he's full of anger."

The 48-year-old actor gravitates toward complex, off-kilter roles. He is celebrated for the 2003 British miniseries "State of Play," where he played an upright Member of Parliament who may have been involved in a string of killings. The same year, "The Deal" was a British TV film that starred Morrissey as MP (and future prime minister) Gordon Brown.

A few years earlier, he played a jazz musician with underworld connections in the British series "Finney." In the 2000 film "Some Voices," he was the long-suffering brother of schizophrenic Daniel Craig.

Morrissey approached the role of The Governor with his typical concern that the character display many facets and steadily develop.

"I wanted to be sure he didn't just become a cartoon buddy," Morrissey says.

Meanwhile, he began mastering the obligatory Southern accent.

Describing his happy, working-class childhood in Liverpool, England ? "it was a tough environment, but tough in the right way" ? Morrissey speaks in the singsongy lilt reminiscent of the Liverpudlian lads who formed the world's greatest rock band (and might pronounce "band" something like "bah-yind.")

He says he worked with the same accent coach assigned to series star Andrew Lincoln (who plays Rick Grimes), a fellow Brit. And he trained hard. "My children got very bored with me reading them bedtime stories in a Georgia accent," he says with a laugh.

The Woodbury scenes were shot in the town of Senoia, Ga., 40 miles south of Atlanta. Months of filming took Morrissey away from his family ? sons 17 and 8 years old, and a daughter, 15, as well as his wife, novelist Esther Freud (who happens to be the great-granddaughter of Sigmund Freud).

"The people who live there are great," says Morrissey, "because we do disrupt their lives." Shooting for the season wrapped in November, "and I had a lovely time there."

But will The Governor be back to rule over the ultimate gated community? Not surprisingly, Morrissey is cagey when replying to that question: "Contractually, I'm there for five years. But that's not to say that I don't die at the end of this season, Or whenever."

Whether or not he's back on "The Walking Dead," Morrissey means to keep taking risks with his roles.

"I want to go into a job feeling a bit of frisson, thinking things MAY not work," he explains before offering "Blackpool" as a prime example.

Retitled "Viva Blackpool" for its U.S. telecast in 2005, this was a quirky British miniseries in which he costarred with David Tennant, whose credits include The Doctor in "Dr. Who." Morrissey played the thuggish owner of an arcade in the seaside town of Blackpool, England, who becomes swallowed up in a murder probe.

What truly set apart the series was the penchant of its characters for bursting into a song-and-dance number at the drop of a hat. Think Tony Soprano channeling Elvis. Clearly, THIS was risky for all concerned!

"I remember halfway through the shoot they showed us a bit of the dailies," says Morrissey, laughing at the memory. "Then me and David Tennant walked away and got in the lift and the doors closed. And we went, 'We're NEVER gonna work again!'"

As it happened, "Blackpool" charmed viewers and won awards. And its stars did work again.
