Here's Two Words You Shouldn't Use on Your Online Dating Profile

prozac-dogIn reviewing some of the profiles through various dating sites, I found some interesting profiles. I have not altered a thing about these statements and think that words crazy or Prozac ?should not appear in your profile. The reason I say this is because you are going to attract what you don?t want.

I have ranked the profile statements based on what I think about them.

Ok, so here?s a tip on what not to include in your online dating profile.? Here?s the prime reason, you shouldn?t use crazy in your profile EVER:

I speak fluent?Crazy.1

I am the only heterosexual male that cried during the movie ?likecrazy !1

People have said nice eyes, playful,?crazy, weird, funny,2

Did I say / tell U that I?m a Little?Crazy?/ Nuts ?

Attracting?crazy?women?.I don?t wanna be good at it ?cause it?s a bad thing but hey, we all have gifts. So if you?re?crazy, I?m gonna need you to go quit reading and go away now?..not kidding?..see you can?t even follow a simple request ya?crazyass!3

You?re probably sick of perusing profiles in which people sound really awesome, and then you find out they?re?crazy?and fucked up, selfish, domineering, paranoid, whatever. Just?crazy.3

  1. Cute, but probably not what you want to portray.
  2. People may think this is an accurate portrayal of you.
  3. Yeah this is effective! Offending people always works.

Or Prozac! These really need no ranking. Save psychiatric medications discussion for the 3rd date.

I just don?t think that headaches are caused by a deficiency of Tylenol, or depression by a deficiency of?Prozac.

I LOVE PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY SANDWICHES AND MY CAT NEEDS SOME?PROZAC?hahahaI?ve been told I?m a ?deep thinker.

But I would rather deal with the mood swings than become aProzac?junkie and not feel anything at all.

I?m a programmer, and I have two cats which I?ve named?Prozac and Zoloft.

Painting my miniatures ? it?s cheaper than?prozac?and less dangerous than street drugs.

Wondering if the?Prozac?is going to kick in

suit the mood of the day, wasting time on the internet , rambling, causing a scene , intimidating people when I?m onProzac?, kriss kross puzzles

Israel hits Syria arms convoy to Lebanon - sources

BEIRUT | Wed Jan 30, 2013 7:45pm GMT

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Israeli jets bombed a convoy on Syria's border with Lebanon on Wednesday, sources told Reuters, apparently targeting weapons destined for Hezbollah in what some called a warning to Damascus not to arm Israel's Lebanese enemy.

"The target was a truck loaded with weapons, heading from Syria to Lebanon," said one Western diplomat, adding that the consignment may well have included anti-aircraft missiles.

The overnight attack, which several sources placed on the Syrian side of the border, followed warnings from Israel that it was ready to act to prevent the revolt against President Bashar al-Assad leading to Syria's chemical weapons and modern rockets reaching either his Hezbollah allies or his Islamist enemies.

A source among the Syrian rebels said an air strike around dawn (0430 GMT) blasted a convoy on a mountain track about 5 kilometres (3 miles) south of where the main Damascus-Beirut highway crosses the border. Its load probably included high-tech anti-aircraft and anti-tank missiles, but not chemical weapons.

"It attacked trucks carrying sophisticated weapons from the regime to Hezbollah," the source said, adding that it took place inside Syria, though the border is poorly defined in the area.

A regional security source said the target was weaponry given by Assad's military to fellow Iranian ally Hezbollah:

"This episode boils down to a warning by Israel to Syria and Hezbollah not to engage in the transfer of sensitive weapons," the source said. "Assad knows his survival depends on his military capabilities and he would not want those capabilities neutralised by Israel - so the message is this kind of transfer is simply not worth it, neither for him nor Hezbollah."

With official secrecy shrouding the event, few details were corroborated by multiple sources. All those with knowledge of the event - from several countries - spoke anonymously.

There was no comment from the Israeli or Syrian governments nor Hezbollah. Israel's ally the United States declined all comment. A Lebanese security source said its territory was not hit, though the army reported a heavy presence of Israeli jets through the night after days of unusually frequent incursions.

Such a strike would fit Israel's policy of pre-emptive covert and overt action to curb Hezbollah and does not necessarily indicate a major escalation of the war in Syria. It does, however, indicate how the erosion of the Assad family's rule after 42 years is seen by Israel as posing a threat.

Israel this week echoed concerns in the United States about Syrian chemical weapons, but its officials say a more immediate worry is that the civil war could see weapons that are capable of denting its massive superiority in airpower and tanks reaching Hezbollah; the group fought Israel in 2006 and remains a more pressing threat than its Syrian and Iranian sponsors.

Wednesday's strike could have been a rapid response to an opportunity. But a stream of Israeli comment on Syria in recent days may have been intended to limit surprise in world capitals.

The head of the Israeli air force said only hours before the attack that his corps, which has an array of the latest jet bombers, attack helicopters and unmanned drones at its disposal, was involved in a covert "campaign between wars".

"This campaign is 24/7, 365 days a year," Major-General Amir Eshel told a conference on Tuesday. "We are taking action to reduce the immediate threats, to create better conditions in which we will be able to win the wars, when they happen."

JETS OVER LEBANON

In Israel, where media operate under military censorship, broadcasters immediately relayed international reports of the strike. Channel Two television quoted what it called foreign sources saying the convoy was carrying anti-aircraft missiles.

Israeli jets routinely fly over Lebanon and there have been unconfirmed reports in previous years of strikes on Hezbollah arms shipments. An attack inside Syria could be diplomatically provocative, however, since Assad's Iranian ally said on Saturday that it would view any strike as an attack on itself.

There was no immediate comment on the incident from Tehran, which Israel views as its principal enemy and with which it is engaged in a bitter confrontation over Iran's nuclear programme.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, set for a new term after an election, told his cabinet that Iran and turmoil in Arab states meant Israel must be strong: "In the east, north and south, everything is in ferment, and we must be prepared, strong and determined in the face of all possible developments."

The Israeli military confirmed this week that it had lately deployed two batteries of its Iron Dome rocket-interceptor system to around the northern city of Haifa, which came under heavy Hezbollah missile fire during a brief war in 2006.

Israel's refusal to comment on Wednesday is usual in such cases; it has, for example, never admitted a 2007 air strike on a suspected Syrian nuclear site despite U.S. confirmation of it.

By not acknowledging that raid, Israel may have ensured that Assad did not feel obliged to retaliate. For 40 years, Syria has offered little but bellicose words against Israel. A failing Assad administration, some Israelis fear, might be tempted into more action, while Syria's Islamist rebels are also hostile to Israel and could present a threat if they seize heavier weapons.

Israeli Vice Premier Silvan Shalom said on Sunday that any sign that the Syrian army's grip on its presumed chemical weapons stocks was slipping could trigger Israeli intervention.

But Israeli sources said on Tuesday that Syria's advanced conventional weapons, much of it Russian-built hardware able to destroy Israeli planes and tanks, would represent as much of a threat to Israel as chemical arms in the hands of an enemy.

Interviewed on Wednesday, Shalom would not be drawn on whether Israeli forces had been in action in the north, but he described the country as part of an international coalition seeking to stop spillover from Syria's two-year-old insurgency.

Recalling that President Barack Obama had warned Assad of U.S. action if his forces used chemical weapons, Shalom told Israel Radio: "The world, led by President Obama, who has said this more than once, is taking all possibilities into account.

"Any development ... in a negative direction would be something that needs stopping and prevention."

LEBANON WAR

During the 2006 war in Lebanon, Israel's air forced faced little threat, though its navy was taken aback when a missile hit a ship. Israeli tanks suffered losses to rockets, and commanders are concerned Hezbollah may get better weaponry.

In what might have been a sign of seeking to reassure major powers, Israeli media reported this week that the country's national security adviser was despatched to Russia and military intelligence chief to the United States for consultations.

Shashank Joshi of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) in London saw any strike on Wednesday as intended to deliver a signal rather than heralding a major escalation from Israel.

"The Israelis are sending a message not just to Hezbollah but also to Assad's forces that they have no wish to get dragged in, but chemical weapons and certain types of missiles are a red line for them, and that regime forces ought to signal, in turn, to Hezbollah that they should proceed with caution," he said.

Worries about Syria and Hezbollah have sent Israelis lining up for government-issued gas masks in recent days. According to the Israel post office, which is handling distribution of the kits, demand roughly trebled this week.

"It looks like every kind of discourse on this or that security matter contributes to public vigilance," its deputy director Haim Azaki told Israel's Army Radio. "We have really seen a very significant jump in demand."

Jamie Dupree's Washington Insider: Obama recess appointees face calls for resignation

Republicans in Congress are demanding that two members of the National Labor Relations Board and the head of a new consumer financial watchdog agency resign their posts in the Obama Administration, as Political Washington tries to digest a sweeping appeals court ruling that would drastically limit the power of a President to use "recess appointments." ?

"As someone who has taken an oath to uphold the Constitution, I ask that you resign immediately," wrote Sen. Mike Johanns (R-NE) on Friday to Richard Griffin, a member of the NLRB who was installed in that position by President Obama in January of 2012.

Griffin's recess appointment, as well as that of a second NLRB member, was declared unconstitutional on Friday by a federal appeals court in Washington, D.C., which said that President Obama had wrongly installed his picks when the Senate was not actually in recess.

That outcome was expected by some legal scholars, since the standard procedure in recent years has been that a President can install nominees through recess appointments when the Senate has left town on an official adjournment; in this case, the Senate was meeting every three days as required in the Constitution.

But this ruling, which can be read here, went one big step further, by saying that no President can make a recess appointment during a session of Congress, but only in between sessions, when the House and Senate are not in Washington, D.C.

That decision runs against a number of years of expanding Presidential use of recess appointments, which are often deployed "intrasession" - that is, during recesses which occur while the Congress is in session.

"The available evidence shows that no President attempted to make an intrasession recess appointment for 80 years after the Constitution was ratified," the three member appeals panel wrote in this decision, which would seemingly take Presidential powers in this arena back to the original years of the Founding Fathers.

"Presidents made only three documented intrasession recess appointments prior to 1947," the judges wrote in their decision, saying the first was by Andrew Johnson in 1867, "with the other two coming during the presidencies of Calvin Coolidge and Warren Harding."

Despite the decision, the two NLRB members involved in this case weren't giving up their seats, and the board rejected the idea that its actions for the past year could all be found invalid as a result.

"The Board respectfully disagrees with today?s decision and believes that the President?s position in the matter will ultimately be upheld," said NLRB Chairman Mark Gaston Pearce.

At this point, the Obama Administration could appeal the decision to the full D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, or go directly to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Also in play here is President Obama's choice to run the new Consumer Financial Protection Board, Richard Cordray, who also was recess appointed to that position at the same time as the NLRB officials.

The White House rejected any assertion that any of those appointments could be called into question by this ruling, though spokesman Jay Carney stopped short of announcing an appeal of the decision.

"There have been, according to the Congressional Research Service, something like 280-plus intrasession recess appointments by, again, Democratic and Republican administrations, dating back to 1867," Carney told reporters.

"That?s a long time and quite a significant precedent," he added.

While Carney is correct, the President's timing for his recess appointments was controversial for another reason, because the Senate was not technically out of session.

Yes, no legislative business was being conducted, but the Senate was meeting every few days in "pro-forma" sessions to satisfy requirements in the Constitution, a technique that had been used by Democrats in 2007 and 2008 to prevent more recess appointments by President George W. Bush.

"Neither House, during the session of Congress, shall, without the consent of the other, adjourn for more than three days," is what the Constitution says.

~

Readers of my blog and listeners to my news reports are familiar with my observations from Capitol Hill that Republicans and Democrats often change their arguments on certain issues, not based upon the facts of the matter involved, but on whether their party is in power in the White House or the Congress.

The filibuster is a good example of that; the party that tries to limit the filibuster routinely is the party that is in majority control of the Senate. The minority loves the filibuster, except when they are in the majority in future years.

And so, when it comes to limits on Presidential power to make a recess appointment, the parties alternately raise hell or stay quiet depending on whether their party controls the White House as the earlier example cited above, when Democrats used pro-forma sessions in the Senate to block Bush recess picks back in 2007 and 2008.

In this case, Democrats have kept quiet about the Obama recess appointments which were ruled unconstitutional, but a few years ago, we had the exact opposite situation, when Democrats challenged?recess appointments to the circuit court of Appeals by President George W. Bush; the courts ultimately upheld the Bush appointment of William Pryor.

And round and round we go.

Where this stops - maybe the U.S. Supreme Court.

Top earning 'Idol' made $8 million in 2012

By Zack O'Malley Greenburg, Forbes

Jason Reed / Reuters file

Kelly Clarkson sang "My Country 'Tis of Thee" during swearing-in ceremonies for President Barack Obama on Jan. 21.

"American Idol"?first aired on June 11, 2002 ? when Scotty McCreery was 8 years old. Now 19, he?s nearly two years removed from winning the show, and he?s already living up to its lofty title.

After receiving a $250,000 record deal as part of his "Idol"?victory package, McCreery smashed expectations with his debut album,?"Clear As Day," which sold over 1 million copies. The teenager quickly took advantage by hitting the road last year, opening for?Brad Paisley.?Next?up: a solo tour and a new album later this year, all while continuing his college education. And he?ll be able to afford it, with an estimated $4 million in earnings last year, thanks largely to "Idol."

Forbes slideshow: The 10 top-earning 'American Idols' of 2012

?It?s meant everything,? says McCreery of the show. ?I didn?t have a career before, so it was the starting point for my career and it got me going. ... They reach like 16 million fans on a bad night.?

Indeed they do. Though the show?s 2013 premier earlier this month drew 17.9 million viewers, a 19 percent dip from last year, contestants from previous seasons continue to pull in heady annual earnings. Only a few bank as much as some of the show?s judges,?who will take home a combined $54 million?? nearly twice the total earnings of the top 10 alums. A notable exception: the one who started it all.

Kelly Clarkson leads this year?s list with earnings of $8 million, about what Nicki Minaj makes for her role on "Idol"?and twice what?Keith Urban?gets. More than a decade after winning Season One, Clarkson continues to grow her career, and her bank account, with the help of gold-certified album "Stronger," a mentor role on?"The Voice," a Toyota commercial and a lucrative tour. She also sang ? live ? at President Obama?s inauguration.

The Forbes five: Hip-hops wealthiest artists 2012

Carrie Underwood claims the second spot, boosted by new album "Blown Away."?The record went on to sell 1.2 million copies (just shy of the total for?Justin Bieber?s "Believe").?Underwood didn?t tour much during our scoring period, but with an average nightly gross in excess of $400,000, she?s set for a big year with a string of concert dates running through at least early summer. Underwood shares the No. 2 position with Chris Daughtry, whose eponymous rock group continues to tour heavily, pulling in six-figure nightly grosses along the way.

Our numbers are based on estimated income from May 2011 to May 2012, before subtracting taxes, "American Idol?s" cut and any additional fees for agents, lawyers and managers. The totals were compiled with the help of data from Pollstar, RIAA and others, as well as interviews with industry insiders including managers, publicists, agents and some of the musicians themselves.

Forbes slideshow: World's highest-paid DJs

For a handful of artists, a higher position on next year?s list is all but guaranteed. Adam Lambert toured his way to $6 million in earnings in 2011 and this year falls to No. 7 with $1.5 million after taking time off to record "Trespassing." The new album was released after the end of our scoring period, but debuted at No. 1 on the "Billboard"?charts with 78,000 copies sold its first week.

Keep an eye on last year?s winner, Phillip Phillips, whose commercial success came too recently to land him on this year?s list but could well push him toward the top next time. His coronation song, ?Home,? clocked 279,000 downloads in its opening week, and he?s set to hit the road with Matchbox 20.

Another one to watch: Jordin?Sparks, who ranks No. 6 with earnings of $2 million. She opened for New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys in 2011 and appeared in "Sparkle"?alongside Whitney Houston in 2012. In the coming year, look for her to get a boost from new movie projects and a Reebok endorsement deal ? all successes than can be traced to the show that launched her.

? 'American Idol'?kick-started me in my career,? Sparks?told?FORBES last year. ?It gave me an amazing fan base money can?t buy.?

Forbes slideshow: Top earning dead musicians 2012

Now six years removed from her "Idol"?victory, Sparks doesn?t have to worry about handing a chunk of her earnings back to the show that launched her. More recent winners must turn over somewhere in the neighborhood of half of their income to "Idol"??before paying any remaining agents, managers and attorneys, not to mention Uncle Sam.

For McCreery, that probably means pocketing only about one-fifth of his $4 million payday. He?s fine with that.

Forbes slideshow: 12 music jobs that can pay six figures

?It?s depressing when you look at it, but I?m still making a good amount,? says McCreery. ?I?m not in any way complaining?...?I?m doing a lot better than I was a few summers ago, living off the coin jar in my truck.?

Safer way to vaccinate? Polymer film that gradually releases DNA coding for viral proteins may beat traditional vaccines

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Vaccines usually consist of inactivated viruses that prompt the immune system to remember the invader and launch a strong defense if it later encounters the real thing. However, this approach can be too risky with certain viruses, including HIV.

In recent years, many scientists have been exploring DNA as a potential alternative vaccine. About 20 years ago, DNA coding for viral proteins was found to induce strong immune responses in rodents, but so far, tests in humans have failed to duplicate that success.

In a paper appearing in the Jan. 27 online issue of Nature Materials, MIT researchers describe a new type of vaccine-delivery film that holds promise for improving the effectiveness of DNA vaccines. If such vaccines could be successfully delivered to humans, they could overcome not only the safety risks of using viruses to vaccinate against diseases such as HIV, but they would also be more stable, making it possible to ship and store them at room temperature.

This type of vaccine delivery would also eliminate the need to inject vaccines by syringe, says Darrell Irvine, an MIT professor of biological engineering and materials science and engineering. "You just apply the patch for a few minutes, take it off and it leaves behind these thin polymer films embedded in the skin," he says.

Irvine and Paula Hammond, the David H. Koch Professor in Engineering, are the senior authors of the Nature Materials paper. Both are members of MIT's David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research. The lead author of the paper is Peter DeMuth, a graduate student in biological engineering.

Gradual vaccine delivery

Scientists have had some recent success delivering DNA vaccines to human patients using a technique called electroporation. This method requires first injecting the DNA under the skin, then using electrodes to create an electric field that opens small pores in the membranes of cells in the skin, allowing DNA to get inside. However, the process can be painful and give varying results, Irvine says.

"It's showing some promise but it's certainly not ideal and it's not something you could imagine in a global prophylactic vaccine setting, especially in resource-poor countries," he says.

Irvine and Hammond took a different approach to delivering DNA to the skin, creating a patch made of many layers of polymers embedded with the DNA vaccine. These polymer films are implanted under the skin using microneedles that penetrate about half a millimeter into the skin -- deep enough to deliver the DNA to immune cells in the epidermis, but not deep enough to cause pain in the nerve endings of the dermis.

Once under the skin, the films degrade as they come in contact with water, releasing the vaccine over days or weeks. As the film breaks apart, the DNA strands become tangled up with pieces of the polymer, which protect the DNA and help it get inside cells.

The researchers can control how much DNA gets delivered by tuning the number of polymer layers. They can also control the rate of delivery by altering how hydrophobic (water-fearing) the film is. DNA injected on its own is usually broken down very quickly, before the immune system can generate a memory response. When the DNA is released over time, the immune system has more time to interact with it, boosting the vaccine's effectiveness.

The polymer film also includes an adjuvant -- a molecule that helps to boost the immune response. In this case, the adjuvant consists of strands of RNA that resemble viral RNA, which provokes inflammation and recruits immune cells to the area.

The ability to provoke inflammation is one of the key advantages of the new delivery system, says Michele Kutzler, an assistant professor at Drexel University College of Medicine. Other benefits include targeting the wealth of immune cells in the skin, the use of a biodegradable delivery material, and the possibility of pain-free vaccine delivery, she says.

"It's an interesting approach that can be applied not just to delivery of DNA-based vaccine antigens, but other small molecules," says Kutzler, who was not part of the research team.

Eliciting immune responses

In tests with mice, the researchers found that the immune response induced by the DNA-delivering film was as good as or better than that achieved with electroporation.

To test whether the vaccine might provoke a response in primates, the researchers applied a polymer film carrying DNA that codes for proteins from the simian form of HIV to macaque skin samples cultured in the lab. In skin treated with the film, DNA was easily detectable, while DNA injected alone was quickly broken down.

"The hope is that that's an indication that this will translate to large animals and hopefully humans," Irvine says.

The researchers now plan to perform further tests in non-human primates before undertaking possible tests in humans. If successful, the vaccine-delivering patch could potentially be used to deliver vaccines for many different diseases, because the DNA sequence can be easily swapped out depending on the disease being targeted.

"If you're making a protein vaccine, every protein has its little quirks, and there are manufacturing issues that have to be solved to scale it up to humans. If you had a DNA platform, the DNA is going to behave the same no matter what antigen it's encoding," Irvine says.

Shrewd Strategies On How To Deal With Hemorrhoids | Daily Health ...

Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids

Dependent on the size and pain level of the hemorrhoid, you could attempt to gently return it to the inside of your body. Gently pushing them back inside the body can reduce hemorrhoid pain caused from sitting for prolonged periods, or from swelling due to irritation. If you decide to do this, be extremely gentle and don?t do anything to worsen the condition.

Undue strain in bowel movements is a normal contributing factor to the development of hemorrhoids. Increase the amount of water you drink and eliminate refined sugar from your diet to soften your stool. Squatting can also help in passing bowel movements without straining. When you are on the toilet, put a short stool underneath your feet. Interestingly, hemorrhoids don?t plague cultures for whom it is customary to squat while using the toilet to the degree that they plague those accustomed to the porcelain niceties.

You do not have to suffer needlessly through a bout of hemorrhoids with no relief at all. Try bathing the region with a sitz bath for 10 minutes several times throughout the day. You might also feel better if you apply cold compresses in the affected area.

If you think that you may have a hemorrhoid, schedule an appointment to see your doctor. It can be tricky to correctly differentiate between a polyp and a hemorrhoid, and this confusion can lead to unnecessary panic. Schedule a quick check-up with your doctor if you are concerned about any growth.

Caffeine will help keep you awake, and it can also help you with your hemorrhoids. Caffeine works in your favor as it will stimulate the bowels and help you avoid some of the issues related to hemorrhoids, such as constipation and hard stool.

Add more fiber in your diet if you have hemorrhoids. This can be brought on by straining while you are making a bowel movement. Avoid constipation by adding ample fiber to your daily diet, so that you will not aggravate your hemorrhoid condition. Staying regular will assist you in battling hemorrhoids.

If your target is to minimize hemorrhoids, see to it that you?re body is properly hydrated. To get loose and soft stools, you should drink at least eight glasses of water and beverages that do not contain alcohol every day.

If you are having hemorrhoid problems, there?s a simple remedy you can try. If you feel like you need to release some feces out of your body, don?t wait! A lot of people don?t know that they should defecate as soon as they feel the urge to when they have hemorrhoids, this is because your stool becomes harder the longer it stays in the large intestine, which makes it hurt when you go when you have hemorrhoids. Try not to strain during a bowel movement, as this aggravates hemorrhoids.

As has already been mentioned, there are all kinds of ways to treat hemorrhoids. If you tend to have problems with hemorrhoids, you should keep a good stock of supplies to treat your symptoms as needed. Use the information in this article and you will have more knowledge about hemorrhoids.

Penicillin, not the pill, may have launched the sexual revolution

Jan. 28, 2013 ? The rise in risky, non-traditional sexual relations that marked the swinging '60s actually began as much as a decade earlier, during the conformist '50s, suggests an analysis recently published by the Archives of Sexual Behavior.

"It's a common assumption that the sexual revolution began with the permissive attitudes of the 1960s and the development of contraceptives like the birth control pill," notes Emory University economist Andrew Francis, who conducted the analysis. "The evidence, however, strongly indicates that the widespread use of penicillin, leading to a rapid decline in syphilis during the 1950s, is what launched the modern sexual era."

As penicillin drove down the cost of having risky sex, the population started having more of it, Francis says, comparing the phenomena to the economic law of demand: When the cost of a good falls, people buy more of the good.

"People don't generally think of sexual behavior in economic terms," he says, "but it's important to do so because sexual behavior, just like other behaviors, responds to incentives."

Syphilis reached its peak in the United States in 1939, when it killed 20,000 people. "It was the AIDS of the late 1930s and early 1940s," Francis says. "Fear of catching syphilis and dying of it loomed large."

Penicillin was discovered in 1928, but it was not put into clinical use until 1941. As World War II escalated, and sexually transmitted diseases threatened the troops overseas, penicillin was found to be an effective treatment against syphilis.

"The military wanted to rid the troops of STDs and all kinds of infections, so that they could keep fighting," Francis says. "That really sped up the development of penicillin as an antibiotic."

Right after the war, penicillin became a clinical staple for the general population as well. In the United States, syphilis went from a chronic, debilitating and potentially fatal disease to one that could be cured with a single dose of medicine.

From 1947 to 1957, the syphilis death rate fell by 75 percent and the syphilis incidence rate fell by 95 percent. "That's a huge drop in syphilis. It's essentially a collapse," Francis says.

In order to test his theory that risky sex increased as the cost of syphilis dropped, Francis analyzed data from the 1930s through the 1970s from state and federal health agencies. Some of the data was only available on paper documents, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) digitized it at the request of Francis.

For his study, Francis chose three measures of sexual behavior: The illegitimate birth ratio; the teen birth share; and the incidence of gonorrhea, a highly contagious sexually transmitted disease that tends to spread quickly.

"As soon as syphilis bottoms out, in the mid- to late-1950s, you start to see dramatic increases in all three measures of risky sexual behavior," Francis says.

While many factors likely continued to fuel the sexual revolution during the 1960s and 1970s, Francis says the 1950s and the role of penicillin have been largely overlooked. "The 1950s are associated with prudish, more traditional sexual behaviors," he notes. "That may have been true for many adults, but not necessarily for young adults. It's important to recognize how reducing the fear of syphilis affected sexual behaviors."

A few physicians sounded moralistic warnings during the 1950s about the potential for penicillin to affect behavior. Spanish physician Eduardo Martinez Alonso referenced Romans 6:23, and the notion that God uses diseases to punish people, when he wrote: "The wages of sin are now negligible. One can almost sin with impunity, since the sting of sinning has been removed."

Such moralistic approaches, equating disease with sin, are counterproductive, Francis says, stressing that interventions need to focus on how individuals may respond to the cost of disease.

He found that the historical data of the syphilis epidemic parallels the contemporary AIDS epidemic. "Some studies have indicated that the development of highly active antiretroviral therapy for treating HIV may have caused some men who have sex with men to be less concerned about contracting and transmitting HIV, and more likely to engage in risky sexual behaviors," Francis says.

"Policy makers need to take into consideration behavioral responses to changes in the cost of disease, and implement strategies that are holistic and longsighted," he concludes. "To focus exclusively on the defeat of one disease can set the stage for the onset of another if preemptive measures are not taken."

The Weekly Good: Here?s How $7 Can Help Change The World

weekly-good41[Editor's Note: This is a weekly series. If your company is doing something amazing to help a charitable cause or doing some good in your community, please reach out.] What if just by buying a t-shirt that spreads a message for a charitable cause, you could help fund that cause? What if there was a website that highlighted a specific cause and t-shirt every week? And what if that website donated $7 from each sale to that cause? You’d have Sevenly.org, and a pretty amazing startup with the sole purpose of helping to raise both money and awareness, all with fashion, e-commerce and you of course. By highlighting one cause a week, Sevenly puts all of its focus on promoting that cause, who benefits from it, and gives you a simple call to action…buy a t-shirt. I spoke to Ryan Wood from Sevenly and here’s how he describes his startup’s mission: The way that our model works is that for every single product purchased from our website, Sevenly donates $7 to that weeks cause on behalf of the supporter. For example, if our supporters purchase 1,000 products during the 7 day campaign, Sevenly will write a check for $7,000 and donate it directly to the cause (charity partner) for that week. Through this model we’re also able to do some pretty exciting things. Often times we’re able to quantify our purchases to say, for example, for every item purchased an orphaned child in Thailand will be provided with daily meals for an entire month. Or, for every item purchased a child struggling with cancer will be given a jar full of toys that will bring joy and happiness to their lives. In addition to being able to quantify these purchases, we are able to introduce match donors occassionaly for our campaigns, raising the donation amount from $7 to $14 per item purchased, and in some cases, a full $21 donated per item purchased. This week’s shirt benefits Child Help, which is dedicated to helping victims of child abuse and neglect. The company has already raised $1,554,040 for various causes since its launch, with its items being shared on various social networks 4,018,721 times. That’s quite a network effect, and pretty good for a company that started less than two years ago. While I’m not a fan of infographics, Sevenly has put one together that shows you why their model works

Teachers, Please Read This and React ? Diane Ravitch's blog

An article in Education Week reports on studies by economists claiming hat when teachers take early retirement, student test scores go up. Behind this is the assumption that new teachers are more successful than experienced teachers.

This sounds counter-intuitive to me, but I would like to know what teachers think.

A quote: ?Boosting early retirement in cash-strapped districts doesn?t hurt students? math and reading scores, according to new studies released at the American Economic Association meeting here, but pension-incentive programs may cost schools some of their most effective teachers.
Separate studies of teachers in California, Illinois, and North Carolina paint a complex picture of the choice increasingly faced by education leaders: Keep your most experienced?and expensive?teachers, or encourage them to retire to ease budget woes.?

Azarenka secures back-to-back Australian titles

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) ? Victoria Azarenka won her second consecutive Australian Open title, beating Li Na 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a dramatic final that contained a break for fireworks, two medical timeouts and a nasty fall to the court by Li.

The Chinese star first tumbled to the court after twisting her left ankle in the fifth game of the second set and had it taped.

On the first point after a 10-minute pause in the third set while fireworks boomed overhead from nearby Australia Day celebrations, Li fell over again and slammed the back of her head on the court. The 2011 French Open champion was treated immediately and had another timeout before being allowed to resume the match.

Azarenka, who broke down in tears and sobbed into her towel when the match ended, won five of the next six games to claim her second major title and retain the No. 1 ranking.

"Unfortunately, you have to go through some rough patches to achieve great things. That's what makes it so special for me," she said. "I went through that, and I'm still able to kiss that beautiful trophy."

Serena Williams, who lost in the quarterfinals, will become the new No. 2 in the rankings.

The 2-hour, 40-minute match featured 16 service breaks, with Li losing her service nine times.

On a crisp Saturday night, Azarenka won the coin toss and elected to receive, a ploy that seemed to work when a nervous Li was broken to start the match. After a double fault on the first point, Li's forehand long gave Azarenka the early lead.

When she first injured her ankle, Li was trailing 3-1 in the second set. When she came back, she won three of the next four games to level the set at 4-4, but Azarenka broke back and then held her serve to level the match.

Azarenka broke in the opening game of the final set, just two games before the match was suspended for the fireworks, a planned stoppage of play that both players were notified about before the match.

While Azarenka jogged around and practiced her serving motion during the 10-minute fireworks break, Li sat on her courtside chair for most of the stoppage.

It was on the first point that she again fell to the court.

Li said she went "totally black" for two seconds after her head hit the court, and when a medical official asked her to follow her finger, "I started laughing, thinking 'This is a tennis court, not like a hospital.'"

Li said the tournament doctor saw her after the match and checked out her head and neck.

"I should be OK,' Li said.

From the outset, the capacity crowd at Rod Laver Arena was firmly behind Li, cheering loudly when she was introduced. Azarenka, meanwhile, had her errors applauded, and one spectator even mocked the loud hooting sound she makes when she hits a shot.

The chill from the crowd was a remnant of Azarenka's semifinal win over American teenager Sloane Stephens, when Azarenka was criticized for taking a questionable 10-minute medical timeout near the end of the match. She was accused of taking the time out to compose herself after she'd wasted five match points while serving for the match against Stephens, although Azarenka said she needed the time out because a rib injury was making it difficult for her to breathe.

In the second set Saturday, a few fans heckled Azarenka over the incident. One man yelled, "Take a deep breath, Vicky."

By the end of the match, she appeared to have won some of the fans back. Azarenka's friend, rapper Redfoo, yelled down to her from the player box "You deserve it," and she later blew kisses to the crowd. Someone else in the crowd shouted "Victoria, we love you."

Azarekna appeared to quickly forgive the crowd, saying during the trophy presentations that she wanted to thank the fans for their support.

"I will always keep very special memories of this court and it will be in my heart forever," she said, pausing several times to find the right words. "Of course, I (almost) forgot to say congratulations to Li Na, she's had a terrific start to the year ... hope to see you in many, many more finals."

Azarenka and Li had met twice before in Grand Slam tournaments, with Li winning both times ? in the fourth round of the 2011 Australian Open and quarterfinals at the French Open. Li lost the 2011 Australian Open final to Kim Clijsters but won her first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros a few months later, beating Francesca Schiavone.

But after failing to advance past the fourth round at any major in 2012, Li hired Carlos Rodriguez, Justine Henin's former coach. The hard training he's put her through in the past four months appears to be paying dividends.

Li won a WTA tournament in China before travelling to Australia, where she advanced to the semifinals at the Sydney International.

In the men's final on Sunday, Novak Djokovic will attempt to win his third consecutive Australian Open against U.S. Open champion Andy Murray. Djokovic has had the benefit of an extra day off after an easy three-set win over David Ferrer on Thursday night, while Murray needed a tough five-setter to defeat Roger Federer.

Murray has predicted a tough match with long rallies against Djokovic, the player he beat in the final at Flushing Meadows in September.

"I'm ready for the pain," he said. "I hope it's a painful match, that will mean it will be a good one."

In the other final Sunday to end the year's first Grand Slam, the unseeded pairs of Jarmila Gajdosova and Matthew Ebden of Australia and the Czech Republic's Lucie Hradecka and Frantisek Cermak play for the mixed doubles championship.

The storm that never was: Why the weatherman is often wrong

Friday, January 25, 2013

Have you ever woken up to a sunny forecast only to get soaked on your way to the office? On days like that it's easy to blame the weatherman.

But BYU mechanical engineering professor Julie Crockett doesn't get mad at meteorologists. She understands something that very few people know: it's not the weatherman's fault he's wrong so often.

According to Crockett, forecasters make mistakes because the models they use for predicting weather can't accurately track highly influential elements called internal waves.

Atmospheric internal waves are waves that propagate between layers of low-density and high-density air. Although hard to describe, almost everyone has seen or felt these waves. Cloud patterns made up of repeating lines are the result of internal waves, and airplane turbulence happens when internal waves run into each other and break.

"Internal waves are difficult to capture and quantify as they propagate, deposit energy and move energy around," Crockett said. "When forecasters don't account for them on a small scale, then the large scale picture becomes a little bit off, and sometimes being just a bit off is enough to be completely wrong about the weather."

One such example may have happened in 2011, when Utah meteorologists predicted an enormous winter storm prior to Thanksgiving. Schools across the state cancelled classes and sent people home early to avoid the storm. Though it's impossible to say for sure, internal waves may have been driving stronger circulations, breaking up the storm and causing it to never materialize.

"When internal waves deposit their energy it can force the wind faster or slow the wind down such that it can enhance large scale weather patterns or extreme kinds of events," Crockett said. "We are trying to get a better feel for where that wave energy is going."

Internal waves also exist in oceans between layers of low-density and high-density water. These waves, often visible from space, affect the general circulation of the ocean and phenomena like the Gulf Stream and Jet Stream.

Both oceanic and atmospheric internal waves carry a significant amount of energy that can alter climates.

Crockett's latest wave research, which appears in a recent issue of the International Journal of Geophysics, details how the relationship between large-scale and small-scale internal waves influences the altitude where wave energy is ultimately deposited.

To track wave energy, Crockett and her students generate waves in a tank in her lab and study every aspect of their behavior. She and her colleagues are trying to pinpoint exactly how climate changes affect waves and how those waves then affect weather.

Based on this, Crockett can then develop a better linear wave model with both 3D and 2D modeling that will allow forecasters to improve their weather forecasting.

"Understanding how waves move energy around is very important to large scale climate events," Crockett said. "Our research is very important to this problem, but it hasn't solved it completely."

Abusive partners can sabotage birth control

2013-01-24-Abusive-partners-can-sabotage-contraception-docs-say_ST_U.xml

^$^When a husband hides a wife's birth control pills or a boyfriend takes off a condom in the middle of sex in hopes of getting an unwilling girlfriend pregnant, that's a form of abuse called reproductive coercion.

Though researchers don't know exactly how common such coercion is, it's common enough -- especially among women who are abused by their partners in other ways -- that doctors should screen women for signs at check-ups and pregnancy visits, says the nation's leading group of obstetricians and gynecologists.

"We want to make sure that health care providers are aware this is something that does go on and that it's a form of abuse," says Veronica Gillispie, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Ochsner Health System in New Orleans and a member of the committee that wrote the opinion for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. It's published in the February issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Reproductive coercion occurs whenever a partner tries to prevent a woman from making her own choices about pregnancy, Gillispie says. That includes trying to get a woman pregnant against her will, through forced sex or other means; it also includes using threats to get a woman to continue an unwanted pregnancy or end a wanted one.

In studies cited by the committee, "birth control sabotage" was reported by 25% of teen girls with abusive partners and by 15% of women who were physically abused. Some men go as far as to pull out a woman's intrauterine device (IUD) or vaginal contraceptive ring, the committee says.

"Often, it's about taking away choices, taking away freedom, control and self-esteem," says Rebekah Gee, an obstetrician and gynecologist in New Orleans and assistant professor at Louisiana State University. She did not work on the opinion but has studied the problem.

Though it may be rare for men to dislodge an IUD, she says, it's not uncommon for men to refuse to wear condoms, which puts women at risk for pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

An abusive man may believe that getting a woman pregnant binds her closer to him, Gee says.

The opinion says obstetricians and gynecologists can help women in these relationships by directing them to agencies and hotlines, including the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-SAFE (7233). But it also says doctors can take direct action, by providing women with hard-to-detect birth control methods, including IUDs with the removal strings cut, if necessary, or a stash of emergency contraceptive pills in a plain envelope.

In clinics where doctors already have started such efforts, the results have been encouraging, says Rebecca Levenson, senior policy analyst at Futures Without Violence, a non-profit advocacy group based in San Francisco. In one small study, reports of reproductive coercion dropped 71% among women who received information and questionnaires about such abuse. Some of the information was on a card that "can fit inside a shoe," Levenson says.

Additionally, Mr. Moulton, a self-described ?proud former band geek,? provided a cash contribution to Wake County to repair the donated instruments, as well as donating 100 brand new recorders that have been distributed to a high-poverty school in Wake County.

Mr. Moulton wants to help as many students as possible realize their dreams of becoming musicians. His efforts are focused on raising awareness of the tremendous need for used instruments and the potential of recycling. He encourages community members to search their closets for instruments no longer used and to bring them to his shops to donate or sell, so that they may be redistributed to students. In a growing school system with limited resources, the arts program relies on support from community partners. These donations help to ensure that students who might not be able to provide their own instrument will still have access to music class. Participation in the arts develops the 21st-century skills of communication, creativity and collaboration, making Mr. Moulton?s generosity an investment in our future. Throughout its history, Arts Education winner, The Raleigh Fine Arts Society, has promoted and encouraged artistic pursuits in our community. Through lectures, exhibitions, concert and recitals, The Raleigh Fine Arts Society has endeavored to foster public interest in art, music and literature. Its major focus has been on three signature projects:

The North Carolina Artists Exhibition Adopted as the first Society project in 1965, the Artists Exhibition has now grown into an annual juried exhibition for artists throughout the state, with a nationally recognized art curator or educator invited to serve as juror each year. Officially named the North Carolina Artists Exhibition in 2008, during its 30th anniversary year, the exhibition is held in the Betty Ray McCain Gallery at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts. This year, the Society added an important educational component to this project in the form of a DVD presentation for area high schools distributed free of charge. The DVD is intended to encourage and inspire the next generation of NC artists, offering a behind-the-scenes look at a juried art exhibition with insight provided by participating artists and the juror.

The Literary Contest The Literary contest was launched in November 1978 as a short story contest among high school students, juried by professionals and featuring cash awards for prize winners. This short-story competition for Wake County high school students encourages creative writing and recognizes emerging talent. An important part of the contest is the Young Writer?s Workshop where the final judges share their evaluations and provide feedback to the authors of the winning manuscripts. Following the workshop, the winners are honored at an Awards Banquet. In 2012, 913 short stories were submitted from 19 Wake County public and private high schools. Eighteen winners from seven schools were selected.

The Choral Competition In 1999, the Choral Competition was created to showcase choral music at the elementary school level. Elementary school choral groups and their teachers are offered a unique opportunity to perform and share their skills with other schools and the public at Meymandi Hall in the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts. The Celebration promotes the highest standards for excellence in children?s choral singing. It is the only chance available in Wake County for many of these children to present a musical program in a professional setting and to observe other choral groups. Choral directors receive feedback from qualified adjudicators, enabling them to improve future performances. In spring 2012, students from 16 schools performed on two consecutive evenings; approximately 1000 elementary students sang for an audience of 3000. (Nominated by Peggy Wilks)

The honoree in the Individual Category is Elizabeth Beam. Ms. Beam serves as the group leader for the Cardinal Singers, a ladies vocal chorale that performs throughout the community. The Cardinal Singers provide numerous free concerts for senior adult clubs sponsored by the Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department, as well as special concerts open to the public throughout the year. Ms. Beam has served faithfully as the group leader for more than 20 years. She coordinates their concert and performance schedule, develops the content of each performance, and reaches out to the senior community to make the group available for concerts. Her energy and enthusiasm permeates through the group and her passion and love of music is evident.

In typical fashion, Ms. Beam places the emphasis on The Cardinal Singers, describing them as unsung (pun intended) heroes with the seniors in the community. They have been around over 30 years and except for receiving the Fred Fletcher Award of Excellence for Volunteering, they have quietly done what they do so well ? providing high quality programming free of charge, traveling to 25 or so groups each season. Ms. Beam notes that besides the senior clubs, her group has sung for naturalization ceremonies including the one at the International Festival this past fall. Ms. Beam describes the chorale as ?a life style for the singers?probably a quarter of the group is made up of retired/working music teacher/choir directors. (Elizabeth Beam was nominated by Steve White, Recreation Program Director- Senior Adult Program, Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department.)

The United Arts Council?s mission is to build better communities through support and advocacy of the arts. The mission of the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce is to sustain and further develop a thriving economy and to enhance our community?s quality of life.
